Restore Your Smile With Dental Crowns in Germantown, TN

A damaged or weakened tooth doesn’t always need to be removed. In many cases, a dental crown can restore its strength and protect the tooth from further damage. If you are dealing with a tooth that hurts when you chew, looks discolored, or has a noticeable crack, you know how much it can distract you throughout the day. It makes enjoying a meal tough and might even make you hold back your smile in photos. Our dental crowns can be your solution. At Germantown Advanced Dentistry, our custom solutions look completely natural, feel comfortable, and are built to last.

What Is a Dental Crown?

Think of a dental crown as a custom-made, incredibly strong protective jacket for a damaged tooth. Instead of just patching a small spot like a regular filling, a crown fits completely over the visible part of your tooth, right down to the gumline. It seals out bacteria, absorbs the pressure of chewing, and preserves the natural tooth underneath, so you do not have to lose it.

Are You a Candidate for a Dental Crown?

We typically recommend a dental crown treatment when a tooth has been through too much structural damage for a standard filling to safely hold it together. You might need one if you have:

  • A deep cavity that has weakened the walls of your teeth.
  • A tooth that is cracked, fractured, or deeply chipped.
  • An old, oversized metal filling that is starting to crack the enamel around it.
  • Recently had a root canal and need to restore the tooth’s strength.
  • A missing tooth that is being replaced by a dental implant.
  • Severe wear and tear from years of clenching or grinding.

Types of Dental Crowns

There are two main types of dental crowns, and the right option depends on the condition of your tooth and its location. Here’s the difference between the two:

Traditional Dental Crowns

Traditional crowns are completed over two appointments. During your first visit, we’ll gently prepare the tooth, take precise digital impressions, and place a temporary dental crown to protect your tooth while your permanent crown is being crafted by a trusted dental laboratory.

Once your custom crown is ready, you’ll return for a second appointment so we can make sure it fits comfortably before permanently bonding it into place.

Same-Day Dental Crowns

If you’re looking for convenience, you may be a great candidate for same-day dental crowns. Thanks to our CEREC technology, many patients can have their custom crown designed, created, and placed during a single appointment. Busy schedules shouldn’t keep you from getting high-quality dental care.

Dental Crown Materials Available

The lifespan and appearance of your restoration heavily depend on the chosen dental crown material. We evaluate your bite forces and cosmetic preferences to select the ideal option:

  • Porcelain Dental Crown – Highly favored for front teeth due to its translucent quality mimicking real tooth enamel.
  • Zirconia & Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) – Combines immense ceramic strength with an exceptionally natural look.
  • Gold and Metal Alloys – Exceptionally strong options ideal for out-of-sight back molars experiencing heavy grinding.

Benefits of Dental Crown Treatment

A dental crown does much more than simply cover a damaged tooth. It helps restore both your oral health and your confidence. A dental crown:

  • Relieves Pain – Eliminates discomfort caused by fractures or deep structural decay.
  • Prevents Extractions – Safeguards compromised roots so you don’t lose the tooth entirely.
  • Boosts Confidence – Replaces dark lines and cracks with immaculate, natural aesthetics.
  • Stays Strong for Years – Engineered to withstand 10 to 15 years of daily use with proper care.

Caring for Your Dental Crown

Maintaining your crown requires consistency. Keep your smile healthy with these basic daily habits:

  • Brush twice a day with non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss daily, pulling the floss out sideways around temporaries to prevent catching.
  • Avoid chewing ice, hard candies, or using your teeth as tools.
  • Wear a nightguard if you suffer from chronic teeth grinding (bruxism).
  • Visit us regularly for professional cleanings and preventative checkups.

Frequently Asked Questions

Don’t panic. It happens occasionally. Give our office a call as soon as possible, and we’ll schedule you to have it reattached or replaced.

Not at all. We use local anesthesia to completely numb the tooth and the surrounding area before we begin. You might feel a little mild tenderness or sensitivity for a day or two after your appointment, but it goes away quickly.

You can typically eat as soon as the local numbing wears off, which usually takes about 1 to 3 hours after your appointment. Because CEREC crowns are milled right in our office, the dental cement is fully cured and hardened using a specialized ultraviolet light before you even leave the chair.

It will look incredibly natural! We use highly detailed digital shade guides to match the exact translucent properties and color of your neighboring teeth. No one will be able to tell it isn’t your real tooth.
